Omega-3 Fish Oil For Hair Growth
By now you’ve probably heard of the many benefits of omega-3 fatty acids for a variety of bodily functions. As more research is done on the impact this nutrient has on our health, it’s incredible just how many parts of our bodies it affects. Another emerging area of study is now focusing on omega-3 fish oil for hair growth.
Hair loss is impacted by things like age, stress hormones, and even poor diet. Recent studies have pointed to the potential that increasing one’s omega-3 intake may assist in a healthier head of hair. But just how does omega-3-rich, fresh fish oil help with hair follicle growth? Let’s take a look!
How Do Omega-3 Fish Oils Help Hair Growth?
More data is always better when it comes to understanding the health benefits of omega-3 oil supplements, but studies are already showing promising findings.
When someone is experiencing hair loss or thinning, several biological processes are taking place. Throughout our lives, our tens of thousands of hair follicles grow healthy hair in a cycle. For anywhere from 2 to 6 years, our hair follicles grow and maintain hair, but will rest for a period of several months between growth cycles. During this rest period, the hair will fall out of that particular follicle and the cycle resets.
Usually, these follicles are growing on their own separate cycles, and the hair loss is unnoticeable. As we age though, depending on our diets and other factors, some hair follicles stop growing hair altogether.
Scientists and researchers have identified that pattern baldness takes place through a process called miniaturization, wherein hair follicles are genetically over sensitive to dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. But what about thinning and hair loss in other demographics?
Omega-3 fish oils for hair growth have been studied in small research groups over the last decade. The results have found some positive outcomes for test groups that include both men and women.
In a 2015 study, women who took an omega-3 supplement noticed a decrease in hair loss, and a thicker, healthier head of hair. By adding a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids to the participants’ diets, it was observed that hair follicle growth was stimulated and stronger, healthier hair was able to last longer before falling out.
Fueling healthier hair: A healthy level of omega-3 in the daily diet may help stimulate follicle growth and assist with a longer, stronger growth cycle.
How to Get Enough Omega-3 in Your Diet
Whole foods like salmon and mackerel, some nuts, and flax and chia seeds, among other sources, can add omega-3 fatty acids to your daily diet. Unfortunately though, the majority of Americans aren’t getting the optimal amount. Even a diet that includes fish several days a week may not cut it, depending on the type of seafood consumed and how it is prepared.
While shopping for an omega-3 supplement, it’s important to take source and quality into consideration. At Omega3 Innovations, our creators and founders Anne-Marie Chalmers, MD & Bo Martinsen, MD have spent decades researching the benefits and impact that Omega Cure® can have on the mind and body. These two physicians, who began their fish oil journey in Norway, have since helped thousands of people feel better with their delicious fish oil supplement.
